Backstory

I have always had a back-pocket goal of riding my bicycle across the country, but I never seriously considered it until a few years ago.  I turned 50 this year, Henry 18, and graduated from high school. I mentioned the idea to Shelley and she was agreeable.  Henry and Layla responded enthusiastically to the idea, so we started to plan.  The picture is from us on a training ride last fall

Henry was feeling it but felt like he could do it, so he got on his bike and rode almost seventy miles. Mark returned to the store early and got some eggs for French toast. We ate that and finished it all. We ate some leftover cookies from the night before, too. We took it slower for the day, and the morning flew by. We stopped for lunch at a grocery store and ate lunch at an employee table just outside the back door. They had a sign that said EMPLOYEES ONLY TABLE, but all the employees who came in and out of the back door nodded to us and were never bothered by us using their table.      We would like to thank all of you for all your support, well wishes, love sent our way, and most of all, your prayers.  Without your prayers, things would've undoubtedly gone worse than it did.  We are so beyond grateful that we had so many people praying for us!  Every prayer counted and meant so much to us!  Thank you all!  We appreciate it!      To all the warm shower hosts, and Trans Am volunteers.  We can't imagine how different our journey would've been without your generosity and attentiveness to what we needed.  We enjoyed getting to know all of you and hearing your stories of wild adventures and problems that rivaled our own.  Your hospitality and generosity helped us get a different perspective of how deep hospitality goes, and seeing that has changed us and our way of thinking about hosting others in the future.        To all of the people we've never met but we know have follo...

Day 53 - Visiting With Family And Our First Hotel (July 24th, 2024)

City To City: Springfield - Berea Miles: 75 Miles Total: 3,557 Flats: 11 Video: Dinner With Family Mark And Jon-Daniel Thomas Making A Funny Face      Since my dad wanted to arrive in Berea at three in the afternoon to spend time with my other grandparents on my dad's side, we got up early and immediately broke camp because we didn't want our "friend," the sergeant, to come by again. We were pretty sure that we had camped illegally in the state park. The state park was more of a tourist attraction with little cabins and things to do inside them, and it wasn't a place to camp.      Cars kept coming by, so the first thing we did that morning was pack our tents away.  We got on the road earlier than Matt and Mark and told them we'd see them there.      We didn't dilly-dally with our breaks and were hard-pressed to achieve our ambitious goal.
