Ice Cream For An Appetizer


    The morning broke, and we ate breakfast. Again, Matt and Mark traveled together, and we traveled together some ways ahead of them.  We had some encounters with dogs, but they weren't serious about coming after us.  We ate lunch on the side of the road, and as we were finishing up, a mower came by but luckily saw and mowed around us.  But the hills were the same, up and down, with steep grades.
Right before getting into our last town for the day, Henry plunged into a clear creek, and I only got my legs wet until Henry splashed me! But if we stayed still, we could see tiny fish in the creek. Of course, Henry had his shirt off so he could feel the fish nibbling on his back and side. And my dad didn't want to get wet, so he instead decided to sleep on top of a picnic table.
    When we got to Eminence, we got groceries and talked to a local. Since it had been so hot, with the sun shining down on us, and we didn't want to bike more miles back to the town, we got a half gallon of ice cream and ate it on the spot. Then we went to our campsite, where thousands of flies swarmed us, and bug spray didn't help!  So, we were sitting down, sweating with flies swarming around us.  It was miserable.
Matt and Mark joined us later, chatted beforefore all settling down right at sunset.

Day 1 (June 2nd, 2024) - A brutal start

 City To City: Astoria - Hammond Miles: 12 Miles Total: 12 Flats: 0 After getting dropped off at the starting point, we had to build our bikes.  It was raining cats and dogs.  We built our bikes Us eating dinner under a shelter that's supposed to be reserved in advance Us packing things into panniers at the entrance of the museum Our campsite for the night and then started our 10-mile bike ride to the campsite.  It was one of the most challenging rides I have done.  The wind was so fierce you had to peddle to go downhill.  You can see a video (near the end)  of the ride here :  Video You can follow us on Strava here   https://strava.app.link/ O0Be5Qxr8Jb

Day 4 (June 5th, 2024)

Gary cooked us our first hot meal in what felt like a while, which consisted of pancakes with sausage and bacon.  While talking with him, we learned that Gary is a man in his 60s with a voice that isn't loud but carries through the air clearly. He is undoubtedly a man of the woods and truly believes in being a hard worker, supporting others to the best of his ability, and never walking away from an open door that leads to adventures.   He told stories of funny things he had experienced during his cycling hobby.  When Gary talked about his children, a proud glint showed in his eyes.  He is proud of his kids and what they are doing.   As much
