Day 27 - A Mentally Tough Day (June 28th, 2024)

An iPad We Were Playing On In Walmart

Crème Pie For Dessert


    The first fifteen miles of the journey were fast-paced and done in a little less than forty-five minutes.  Then, the rest of the journey was into the crosswind and headwind.  And it was like that all the way to Rawlings except for the last part.
    We stopped for lunch at thirty miles before heading back into the headwind.  Once we arrived in Rawlings, we went to Walmart to find where to stay.  We had to ask three people before we could get specific details, and it turns out that the Walmart is a quarter mile away.  So, we were talking outside about it when two bikers showed up.  One was from London, and the other from Idaho, but both had a strong British accent.  Since they were traveling west, we gave us helpful tips on what to expect in Kentucky.  In Kentucky, twenty dogs came after them, and one of the men had gotten bitten.  They then said spraying water at them would scare the dogs.  But spraying can burn a lot of water, so flicking the water in the dogs' faces will repel them.  
    We were also talking to an employee at Walmart, who said that the wind here was just a breeze at around thirty mph and could get much more windy.
    We went to dinner after a good chat with the bikers and employees. The diner said that they had alcoholic beverages, but once we got there, they had a sign up saying that they weren't serving alcohol and were going to a court hearing because they somehow didn't meet the law's expectations.
    After dinner, we went to Walmart again. Since we had the whole evening, we wandered around Walmart and played video games on iPads there. We ate a crème pie and camped on the edge of the parking lot, halfway behind a jeep to block the blowing wind.  We had also camped by where semis and RVs were allowed to park for the night, right next to the trains, and right next to us was the parking lot light shining right down on us, so all night, it was light out.

    Darn I'm sorry to hear how terribly the Kentucky dogs were acting. That pie looks delicious!

Day 1 (June 2nd, 2024) - A brutal start

 After getting dropped off at the starting point, we had to build our bikes.  It was raining cats and dogs.  We built our bikes Us eating dinner under a shelter that's supposed to be reserved in advance Us packing things into panniers at the entrance of the museum Our campsite for the night and then started our 10-mile bike ride to the campsite.  It was one of the most challenging rides I have done.  The wind was so fierce you had to peddle to go downhill.  You can see a video (near the end)  of the ride here :  Video You can follow us on Strava here   https://strava.app.link/ O0Be5Qxr8Jb

Day 4 (June 5th, 2024)

          B y : L a y l a Eating breakfast with Gary Passing wild radish flower farms Braking for lunch away from the sun With the Cirullo family      In the morning, we ate a delicious breakfast with our host, Gary. Gary cooked us our first hot meal in what felt like a while, which consisted of pancakes with sausage and bacon.  While talking with him, we learned that Gary is a man in his 60s with a voice that isn't loud but carries through the air clearly. He is undoubtedly a man of the woods and truly believes in being a hard worker, supporting others to the best of his ability, and never walking away from an open door that leads to adventures.   He told stories of funny things he had experienced during his cycling hobby.  When Gary talked about his children, a proud glint showed in his eyes.  He is proud of his kids and what they are doing.   As much as he could, he tried to take time to spend with his children.   Gary is a wonderful, incredibly generous, and kindhearted host.
